It starts with a 39% chance to (EDITED) be retained, then when you've tried enough times, it will increase by an amount. I'm not completely sure how it works, but it have something to do with a title.

It's a fairly complicated formula involving your character level and your progress within the Treasure Hunter and Lucky titles.

Lockpicks are like keys, with the nice feature that you have a chance to retain (not break) them. Keys are one-time use for a specific type of Chest (Ascalon, Steel, Shiverpeak, Kurzick, Luxon, Obsidian, Phantom, Istani, etc.) and they break after a single use, Lockpicks can be used over and over until they break (higher rank in Treasure Hunter increases your chance to retain/not break them), and what's more, they can be used on ANY kind of Chest - and they are the ONLY type of "Key" that can open a Locked Chest in EotN or any area in Hard Mode.

yup breaking them is normal and the rate they break depends on the level of chest that youre trying to open, higher end chests will have a greater chance of breaking.
i broke over 4000 close to maxing =) |

When you click to use a lockpick when opening a chest try reading the window that pops up. It tells you the percent chance you will retain it. Reading ftw.
